SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Greene County Commission is inviting eligible community organizations to apply for funding through the Greene County Opioid Settlement Program (OSP), which directs dollars from national opioid settlements toward local efforts to combat and recover from the opioid overdose epidemic.

The funding stems from the 2021 and 2022 national settlements that resolved opioid-related lawsuits against major pharmaceutical distributors, manufacturers and pharmacy chains including McKesson, Cardinal Health, AmerisourceBergen, Janssen Pharmaceuticals (Johnson & Johnson), CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, Teva and Allergan. With full settlement participation, Missouri and its political subdivisions could receive up to $900 million over 18 years. Greene County is one of 98 participating counties in the state.

The need is significant. More than 24,600 Missourians have died from overdoses over the past two decades. In 2023 alone, 1,948 Missourians died from an overdose, and more than 70% of those deaths involved opioids. Nationally, the epidemic has claimed more than half a million lives over the past 20 years.

Through the OSP, the Commission will fund approved projects proposed by local community organizations that improve the public health and welfare of Greene County residents. Proposed projects must align with approved opioid abatement strategies. Those strategies include expanding naloxone (Narcan) distribution and training, medication-assisted treatment, prevention and harm-reduction programs, support for pregnant and postpartum women, treatment for neonatal abstinence syndrome, recovery and "warm hand-off" services, syringe service programs, support for first responders, connections to care, and treatment for justice-involved individuals.

The Greene County Commission has made $260,000 available for this application. Eligible community organizations may apply for funds up to $50,000 each to provide needed assistance to groups impacted by the opioid epidemic. Applicants are strongly encouraged to keep funding requests within 20% of their total organization budget. Required supporting documentation includes the organization's IRS 501(c)(3) determination letter, IRS Form 990, recent tax returns, Secretary of State nonprofit registration, board roster, annual budget, a current signed W-9 and a current financial statement.

The application can be found at https://greenecountymo.gov/osp/. Completed applications and supporting documents should be submitted to scrawford@greenecountymo.gov no later than 4:30 p.m. on August 24, 2026. Organizations with questions about the program or the application process may contact Schuyler Crawford at 417-799-1563 or scrawford@greenecountymo.gov.

“These funds give our local organizations the resources to meet a crisis that has touched far too many families in our community. We encourage every eligible organization doing this work to apply." said Bob Dixon, Greene County Presiding Commissioner.
