SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Greene County Commission is preparing to accept Sheriff Jim Arnott’s resignation after he was recently both confirmed by the U.S. Senate and accepted by President Donald Trump to serve as the next U.S. Marshal for the Western District of Missouri. This will happen as a briefing agenda item at the Commission’s regularly scheduled Tuesday meeting on Aug. 18 at 9:30 a.m. Following the resignation will be the appointment of Captain Jason Johnson as the county’s Interim Sheriff as he was the only candidate that applied during the selection process window last April. Cpt Johnson will be officially sworn in by Clerk Shane Schoeller and serve as interim until midnight December 31, 2026. Like any other candidate, he will need to run for office and be elected by voters in the November 2026 General Election in order to continue serving in the role. No special election will be necessary due to the sheriff resignation and appointment happening on or before August 25.
