SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Greene County Commission has awarded $257,822 through the Greene County Opioid Settlement Program to six local organizations. Each one works to prevent opioid misuse, reduce overdose deaths or support people in treatment and recovery.

The Commission opened applications in July and received 17 proposals from community organizations serving Greene County. Each organization could request up to $50,000.

The 2026 award recipients are:

NAMI Southwest Missouri: $50,000 to sustain and strengthen the NAMI Recovery Connections Initiative. NAMI Southwest Missouri is the local affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness. It provides support, education and advocacy for people and families affected by mental illness.

Greene County Treatment Court: $50,000 to fund medication-assisted treatment and build it into the court's comprehensive treatment court model.

Springfield Victory Mission: $50,000 to support men in recovery who live in Victory Mission's shelter, transitional shelter and Restoration Program. The funds will pay for case management, counseling, drug testing and overdose education.

Community Partnership of the Ozarks: $47,822 for the Greene County Medication Safety Initiative. The initiative will run the Generation Rx prevention program, offer naloxone response training and hand out medication disposal and overdose reversal resources.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Springfield: $30,000 for its Youth Substance Misuse Prevention Initiative. The funds will expand the SMART Moves and Positive Action programs and buy vape-detection technology for the Risdal Family Teen Center.

Good Dads: $30,000 for the Recovery and Restoration for Good Dads program. It offers fathers and couples struggling with addiction classes in parenting skills and conflict resolution, along with transportation assistance, childcare and meals.

"These six organizations are already doing the hard work of helping our neighbors prevent, treat and recover from addiction. These awards put settlement dollars to work right here in Greene County, where they can save lives and strengthen families," said Bob Dixon, Presiding Commissioner.

The money comes from national settlements reached in 2021 and 2022 with opioid distributors McKesson, Cardinal Health and AmerisourceBergen, manufacturer Janssen Pharmaceuticals, pharmacy chains CVS, Walgreens and Walmart, and drugmakers Teva and Allergan. Missouri and its participating local governments could receive up to $900 million over 18 years. Greene County is one of 98 Missouri counties taking part in the settlements.

More than 24,600 Missourians have died from drug overdoses over the past 20 years. In 2023 alone, 1,948 Missourians died from overdoses, and more than 70% of those deaths involved opioids. In Greene County over the last 5 years, there have been 581 drug intoxication deaths. Most of these have involved opioids, either alone or in combination with other types of drugs.
